WFMW: Spelling Salt

I don't know about your little one, but ours...not a fan of spelling practice. I've tried a bunch of different ways to practice; rainbow words (each word written in a different color), sentences (zero fun), white board, drawing what the words are with the letters (fun, but not really effective), etc., etc. But I think I have come up with something that has made her happy and has resulted in her actually remembering the words in her other writing projects. Writing in salt. Yep. That's it.

I had an old blue drawer organizer thing (it should be a dark color) and I just threw some salt in it. She draws the words in the salt, shakes it, doodles, draws another word...you get the idea. Fun, cheap, and effective (at least for her).

That's what works for us, check out what works for others at Kristen's Works For Me Wednesdays.

  2. I like it! Like you said, "Fun, cheap, and effective." I'm betting my 4 1/2 year old will get the biggest kick out of it. I can't wait to give it a try!

  3. I'm an aid at a school and one day we wrote our spelling words in shaving cream. Tons of fun, PLUS, you get a clean desk!

  4. We did this with sugar awhile back. It was fun and easy to clean up!

  5. I've seen this idea and have always meant to try it. This would make a great activity now that we're in with the cold weather, thanks for the reminder!

  6. Yep, she tried to convince me that it would be even MORE fun with cinnamon sugar!! Ahem. I think we'll stick with salt for her! : )
